Arrived packed in a shag carpet conversion van with buckets of KFC and pints of Jack under the chicken. Had seats on the upper level, but the area in front of the stage was general admission, so we wandered down there. They had water cannons to cool the crowd as the Dead were late (as usual).

This was a Willie Nelson 4th of July Picnic. My sister's bf worked security that day. He said the Grateful Dead showed up 2 hours late and played 45 minutes longer than they were supposed to. It was so hot people were stroking out everywhere. There was no second set it was like one long set. It's a great recording of a very unique show. It was my first time seeing them and the beginning of a long journey.

Nice to have a recording of this concert. At average volume, the band sounds back-of-the-room, as compared to, say, 5-5-78 here. But turn the volume all the way up, and show starts to come to life.
Deadbase says there were two sets, in an interesting configuration e.g. Jack Straw mid-first set, and Terrapin-Playin-Drums to open the second.
I've only just stabbed my fork in at this point, but Big River and the Chuck Berry tunes show Garcia, Weir and Keith all pretty crisp. Worth a listen....

I agree. This show is definitely a gem from '78. Be it known that I am a late 70's fan. However, I am spoiled with the dick's picks recordings. This recording sounds week and prevents me really feeling the music. I haven't downloaded much. So I don't know if this is worse than other audience recordings, but I'll be leery in the future.

This show is solid and tight. The event itself was an interesting one...GD as one of the acts at Willie Nelson's 4th of July bash. Here, the Grateful Dead play just one set...but what a set! The crowd is appreciative and the band is in fine form.
Lack of jamming you say? Oh well...I'm sure you can find those jams you were looking for elsewhere (they are plentiful as I am sure you know).
The sound quality is superb; a high quality audience recording. The music is crystal clear to my ears and there is a sufficient amount of crowd noise to give the show a nice atmosphere. Overall, a show I really dig...a treat to listen to.
